I’ll regret this in the morning

It is now nearly three in the morning and I’m still up watching the election coverage. I’m much too tired to make any serious analysis of the results but here is how I see it.

Not as bad for Labour as many thought but still bad. Not as good for us as some people had hoped but still a good move forward. Lib Dems not picking up much from Labour’s decline.

There you go, epic analysis!

  1. Conservatives are the only winners in the English elections. Lib Dems should not be losing councillors when Labour are at an all time low in the polls. I think the analysis will show that Labour voters are switching to Lib Dem in the north and Lib Dem voters are returning to the Conservatives in the south (in much larger numbers). This shows that David Cameron’s shift to the centre is what voters wanted. Over the last twenty years the left and right have been defeated and come to accept the importance of Liberalism and Social Democracy. With both main parties sharing the values of the Lib Dems it is not surprising that they get squeezed out of the running.

  3. Careful James. Your analysis is devoid of spin. Very uncharacteristic for a politician and certainly gives you no future in the media. Biggest loser, as had been said elsewhere is democracy in Scotland. 100,000 spoilt ballot papers, if true, is a disaster.

  5. Shanemcc,This is not surprising for anybody who has looked at the mayoral election in Lewisham where James came third. In Lewisham out of 60,000 ballot papers there were 1,486 rejected papers, 2% of the electorate.Lesson: Don’t run two different electoral systems at the same time, particularly when one is a multi-member constituency and the other requires the selection of preferences. I am sure that Labour are just trying to discredit PR systems by using them in conflicting ways.
