The constituency of Braintree encompasses the towns of Braintree and Halstead both of which were at the heart of the cloth manufacturing industry from the 15th century.

Flemish immigrants brought their weaving skills in the 1600s and the Courtauld family were instrumental in the growth of silk weaving in Halstead from the mid 1800s.

The north of the constituency contains agricultural land and a number of picturesque villages stretching to the Suffolk border.  This Essex/Suffolk countryside was the inspiration for the paintings of John Constable.
