This morning was the London Assembly vote of the Mayor’s consolidated budget. It is probably the most important meeting in the Assembly’s year, it gives Assembly Members a chance to grill the Mayor on his budget and possibly vote it down.
In order to vote down the budget the Assembly needs a 2/3 majority, which they had for a short period this morning because one of the Conservative members was running late. Labour decided to skip the opportunity to scrutinise the Mayor and move straight to a vote, unfortunately for them Victoria Borwick arrived in time to vote and their childish plan failed. The Mayor’s budget went through unscrutinised and the meeting lasted two hours less than planned. I used the unexpected spare time to visit Southwark fire station and talk to the duty watch.
Labour should be thanking Victoria for preventing their budget being enacted, if it was the gaping holes in it would have become evident to the whole of London.
