Is London prepared for a swine flu outbreak?

Tomorrow I’ll be chairing a meeting of the Health & Public Services Committee here at the London Assembly.

We will have Dr Simon Tanner, Regional Director for Public Health in London, answering questions on London’s preparedness for a potential swine flu outbreak. You can see the full agenda for the meeting here or watch it live on our webcast from 3.30PM.

  1. Here we go again. Swine flu, we’re all going to die………again.

What utter tosh. We now have yet another ridiculous panic, initiated by our devious politicians and the irresponsible national media, to add to all of the other great delusions of our times that were going to result in the end of the world – the Millenium Bug, Acid Rain, Killer Salmonela-infected Eggs, Listeria, Mad Cow Disease, Belgian Dioxins, E Coli, Bird Flu, Global Cooling (circa 1970s), Global warming (circa 2000’s) etc, etc.

Hyping up this minor flu outbreak in such a ridiculous manner suits the worlds politicians fine, as they don’t have to explain how they’ve screwed up the world economy or what they’re going to do to remedy it any more. Gordon Brown made the most of it, burying the MP’s expenses fiasco in the middle of it all.

The national media love a good scare story, as they can just sit in their offices inventing new scenarios without haveing to undertake any responsible journalism.

Don’t jump on the bandwagon, James, you’re too sensible a chap to fall for this con.
