Military ID and pubs

There is a story doing the rounds in the media about a couple of Royal Marines not being allowed into a pub in Portsmouth because their military ID cards weren’t accepted as proof if ID.

To be fair to the pub they weren’t stopping the guys coming in because they were in the forces like some establishments have done. But if the MOD form 90 (the military ID card) can get you into a nuclear submarine establishment, it should be good enough to get you into a boozer.

  1. I don’t know what the rules are, but is it very professional for the soldiers to be seen to be drinking as soldiers? Bobbies would get hanged out to dry if they were found to be doing the same thing.

  3. I notice that the pub chain was offering cheap booze to servicemen. I wonder how they can tell who are members of the armed forces – possibly using their military ID cards I suspect (unless they expect the soldiers to turn up with guns or nuclear submarines). So the ID card is enough to entitle you to cheap drinks but not to allow you into the pub in the first place.I don’t think there is any excuse for such stupidity by the management.
