Racism or antisemitism?

Livingstone must secretly want to throttle Lee Jasper. Jasper has almost single handedly undermined the credibility of Livingstone and his administration.

While Boris is launching a strong series of plans to improve London, Livingstone has announced nothing. He is too busy defending Jasper and his own lack of action in dealing with the serious accusations.

Dizzy has found a new reason for Livingstone to bury his head in his hands. While in public Jasper condemns antisemitism on the Mayor’s behalf, he seems more than happy to fraternize with a holocaust denier in private.

Livingstone’s comments to Oliver Finegold and his statement that Israel probably shouldn’t have been created are doing him a lot of damage in London’s Jewish communities. This story about Jasper will be no help in building bridges again.

  1. Livingstone gave up on the Jewish vote in London a long time ago. Any further damage done to his reputation amongst London’s Jewish community will not do him any electoral harm.Wouldn’t it be nice if one of the candidates for mayor was not a racist?

  3. Jimmy,You don’t often post complete bollocks but you really have done so now. Point One: Livingstone may be a scheming malevolent class warrior but his dabbles in racial issues don’t seem to be about racial prejudice as such, merely about attempts to play one racial group off against another in the hope of picking up votes. Unpleasant but not racism. Marxist opportunist he may be, filled with class hatred quite possibly, but not I think filled with racial hatred. (His henchman Jasper isn’t a candidate so happily we need not get sidetracked.)Point Two: Paddick is a serious contender even if likely to come third a long way behind. But anyone who accuses him of racism needs their head read. So I hope you had merely forgotten about him.Point Three: Accusing Boris of racism clearly doesn’t stand up for reasons which have been discussed everywhere at length. If James is prepared to clear him of that charge, who are you to persist in the smear?

  5. Henry,1. Playing one racial group off against another is exactly what racism is about. We need a mayor that can united Londoners not divide them.Telling people to ‘go back to where they come from and see if they do any better under the ayatollah’ is simple racial/xenophobic insults (those in question were in fact Iraqi Jews not Iranians, but they probably all look the same to Ken).2. Fair point. Although I think many people in Lambeth would see all the police as racist. In fact Paddick probably did more than most to reform the police service, which has been (and probably still is) institutionally racist. But I would accept that he is the least racist candidate for mayor.3. James is entitled to his opinion just as much as I am. He is bound to support the Conservative candidate and pretend that the racism of Livingstone is worse than Boris’s. Personally I fear having a mayor who uses the type of language used by Boris and the apologies that follow. When it comes to the role of mayor of London there should be absolutely no confusion over how racist the guy is. I have consistently argued that the Conservatives should have been able to find a better candidate. However I take your second point. It is nice that one of the candidates for mayor is clearly not a racist.
