How did it come to this?

We were once thought of as one of the best armies in the world. Now we are not even taken seriously by one of our closest allies.

How did our international standing fall so far so quickly? Well according to this report in the Telegraph it is because Labour have created an army of bureaucrats which dwarf the real armed forces.

If it were me in the Des Browne hot seat I would do two things. Firstly I wouldn’t do it as a part time job and secondly I would make sure the forces had what they needed to do a professional job. And that includes having enough people.

  1. Poor old Des Browne — he’s got an 8,000 majority over the SNP in Kilmarnock — and next General Election he’s going to lose his seat to them. I bet not a single soldier or military person in his constituency will vote for him — he needs to be focusing full time on this important Defence job and not moonlighting at the Scottish Office (where Salmond rules ok anyway).

  3. I don’t believe the Americans took the British army seriously since 1776. They still think they won the 2nd world war single handed – nothing to do with Britain being in it for twice as long, or the dedication and sacrifices of soldiers in Communist Russia.I think when the US complain about our commitment to counter insurgency you have to look at their great track record of solving these problems around the world. They have nothing to be proud of. Perhaps they are just annoyed that we are trying to get out before they can and before the US presidential elections. The General doth protest too much methinks.
