What does Ahmadinejad want?

As I said in a recent post, British sailors don’t tend to stray into the “wrong waters” and it increasingly looks as if I was right in this case.

The facts as I know them indicate an Iranian insertion into Iraq waters, the kidnapping of British troops and their removal to Tehran with the authority (possibly after the event) from President Ahmadinejad. What the hell was he thinking?

My greatest concern is that an escalation to military action is exactly what he wants, nothing like a good war to quell internal dissent and to distract attention away from domestic problems. He is probably well aware that we a heavily over-committed militarily and that there is little appetite for further conflict in the Psyche of the British public. We have options, but I don’t think that Ahmadinejad is going to lose face easily.

The question that we need to ask ourselves is, how far are we willing to go to get our troops back?

  1. Interesting post, I cannot see what difference the UK Govt. releasing the physical proof of our GPS locations in relation to Iraqi waters will make. We are clearly dealing with a Country that has no interest in pleasing the Global Community and one that knows we are unlikely to use force (as you pointed out). If the UK/US do use force it is likely that harm will be done to the captive servicemen/servicewoman, thus defeating the object of a military response. Sitting here in the comfort of work I am wondering why a more immediate naval response wasn’t made – I suppose rules of engagement and the UK’s sense of playing by the rules prevented such a knee-jerk reaction happening. Fingers crossed for the guys out there.

  3. Whilst I feel every sympathy for our troops taken as hostages by Iran. I cannot help but compare their plight to those civilians and alleged ‘enemy-combatants’ who were/are held in Guantanamo Bay – an issue which you have never shown the slightest concern about. If the US and UK go around kidnapping people and holding them without charges, trial, or access to lawyers or family for years, we cannot expect ‘rogue states’ to behave any better.I hope our troops are released soon, and I hope you can turn your attention to those innocent people held illegally by coalition forces.

  5. Send in the SAS and Maggie driving a tank! Our Sailors would be back now if we had a Prime Minster who wasn’t worried about ijmage and upsetting his wife….Oh yeah of course, why worry about our troops when he has a problem with a neighbour from hell who wants his back garden aswell…Blair needs to act now, and when we have rescued our troops let make sure they know we’re pissed off and direct some missles at their Naval Headquarters…
